TRAFFIC SAFETY SCHOOL AND COURT SUPERVISION
Traffic citations do not always require a court appearance. Some traffic violations may be paid to the Clerk of the Circuit Court without going to court. The Law Enforcement Officer should indicate on the bottom of the citation whether a court appearance is required. If your Citation does not require a Court Appearance in McLean County, the motorist has three options to resolve the matter prior to the court appearance date:

  1. Plead Guilty; pay the fine in person, by mail, or online without coming
    to Court.
  2. Plead not guilty by mail or in person, request a trial (Bench or Jury) date
    and appear in Court.
  3. Plead guilty, request Traffic Safety School and receive Court Supervision
    without going to Court.

Court Supervision is a method in which a Judge withholds the entry of a conviction on a reportable (moving) violation upon a guilty plea. This is conditioned on the fact that you are not issued any other citations in the next six months, that you attend and complete Traffic Safety School during the period of supervision, and that the fine and costs are paid in full. When these conditions are satisfied, the case will be closed. A report of supervision will be submitted to the Secretary of State. The court supervision will remain on the record of the Circuit Court.

IMPORTANT- Not everyone is eligible for Option #3.
