What do I need to do right now?

Get Support

If you have not done so already, please contact another family member, friend, or clergy member to be with you immediately. The emotional and physical assistance these people can provide is very important during this difficult time.

Consider Organ and/or Tissue Donation

If your loved one is an organ/tissue donor (or if organ/tissue donation is something you or your loved one’s legal next of kin would consider) and donation is possible, contact the Coroner’s Office at (309) 888-5210 immediately to discuss this with a representative of the office.

Where is my loved one now?

When it is necessary for the Coroner’s Office to remove the deceased from the scene for further investigation, he/she is transported to the McLean County Coroner’s Office. It is not the normal policy of the Coroner’s Office to allow visitation with the deceased by anyone once the body arrives at our facility. A pathologist will perform an autopsy examination, usually within 24 hours. In certain cases, this type of exam is required by law.

Transportation

The decedent is transported to the Coroner’s Office by a Coroner’s Office Staff Member. You have the right to select the funeral home of your choice to handle all arrangements. Please let the Coroner’s Office know what funeral home you prefer. Transportation from the Coroner’s Office will be provided by the funeral home.
