The McLean County Health Department is here to assist in helping you keep well water resources healthy, secure and clean. We administer statutes, rules and ordinances that govern the drilling and maintenance of healthy water wells. We also monitor well water quality and support community access to clean drinking water.
Potable Water Program
The Potable Water Program operates to assist owners and users of private water supplies, such as wells and water holding tanks, to determine if these water supplies are safe for human consumption.
Water sample testing kits are available at a cost of $20 per kit. If testing indicates contamination, then consultations and further testing are offered at no charge. Water Well Permit & Inspection Program
The Water Well Permit & Inspection Program regulates the installation of private, semi-private and non-community water wells.
Program activities include:
- Inspecting and approving well installations
- Inspecting sealing of abandoned wells
- Issuing well water permits
- Reviewing water well construction plans
- Collecting water samples to assure the safety of well water
- Reporting on water sample result
Non-Community Water Program
The Non-Community Water Program regulates and monitors all water supplies that serve at least 25 members of the public for a minimum of 60 per year in non-residential facilities such as offices, gas stations, churches and grain elevators. It enforces the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act in McLean County for the Illinois Department of Public Health.
